Preventative Healthcare and
Developmental Services to create value

Oral Health

Oral health is the state of the mouth, teeth and orofacial structures that enables individuals to perform essential functions, such as eating, breathing and speaking, and encompasses psychosocial dimensions, such as self-confidence, well-being and the ability to socialize and work without pain, discomfort and embarrassment.

Oral health varies over the life course from early life to old age, is integral to general health and supports individuals in participating in society and achieving their potential.

Aware that poor oral health is a major contributor
to general health conditions, and noting that it has particular associations with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, pneumonia and premature birth.

Vision

The vision of this strategy is Universal Health Coverage for oral health for all individuals and communities by 2030, enabling them to enjoy the highest attainable state of oral health and contributing to healthy and productive lives.

The Need

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children and adults in India.

Outreacch 2030 focuses on reducing tooth decay and other oral health conditions and helping people get oral health care services.

Recognising that oral diseases are highly prevalent, with more than 3.5 billion people suffering from them, and that oral diseases are closely linked to non-communicable diseases, leading to a considerable health, social and economic burden, and that while there have been notable improvements in some countries, the burden of poor oral health remains, especially among the most vulnerable in society.

THE SOLUTION

Strategies to help people access dental services can help prevent problems like tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss.

Individual-level interventions like topical fluorides and community level interventions like community water fluoridation can also help improve oral health. In addition, teaching people how to take care of their teeth and gums can help prevent oral health problems.
